At CAPS, we conduct interviews about people’s experiences and give questionnaires to help find ways to learn about the kinds of problems that people have. We also conduct studies where we ask people to perform tasks on a computer. Most people find these tasks easy to do, and everyone always gets a chance to practice. These computer studies are very important and help us to learn about how people pay attention to things in the world, or how they think about or remember things. The goal of our work is to learn about how thoughts and feelings help us function in the world, and to also learn more about how thoughts and feelings can hurt or cause other problems when they get in the way or don’t quite work right. People who participate in CAPS research include those with many experiences. Some have experienced extreme stress or suffered a traumatic event, and others haven’t. Some have had problems with their mood and emotions such as anxiety, depression, or moodiness, but others who haven’t may also participate.
